Last Gig, First Rehersal, No Gig

| Permalink | Comments (4) | Life | ( 30/01/2006 - 12:50 AM )

This afternoon we had the final gig for choir. A bit on the sad side, but there is talk of doing gigs in the future, just having a few intense rehearsals a few weeks before a gig (i.e.: not rehearsing through the year). Anyhow, the Cantible (sp?) chapter of my journey through life is closed. ;( ...

The gig itself went pretty well - for about an hour. We sung pretty well I thought. Personally, I did too. Although for one particular piece (Scarborough Fair) where there's eight part "harmony" (tones, semitones apart), with me the only one on my line, I don't think I got quite right... boo to the arranger :) (kidding). Anyhow. I've been listening to the recording that was made of the gig; and it's pretty good. I love Banks of Doon... one of my favourite pieces. I was worried a bit before the start of it in regards to my throat... we had spent a long time warming up. But it was fine. I was a lot less nervous than the previous gig. Which was good - probably means I'm more confident with my singing.

Afterwards, the brownies that I'd baked got snapped up, which was good to see :). Although I think I need to get a new snack / desert recipe... I've used that brownies recipe for many things - friends, work, band, choir rehearsal, choir gig, etc. Hmmm.

I need to stay tuned, as there's possibly a choir rehearsing on Thursdays that I may try and join (when they start up). But for now, my Tuesday nights will still be musical, as I've joined QWAB. The rehearsal last week went pretty well, I'm happy with how I played. QWAB rehearses in the Old Museum building, so lots of reverb in the sound... definitely not a studio, or anything... The band's heavy in the flutes and clarinets. I'm on 3rd clari, which is appropriate I think (and fine for me). One of the pieces we're playing is Festival Variations (of Claude T Smith)... brings back the memories ... of ~10 years ago in Wind Ensemble, back in Canberra. A lifetime away. Anyhow, it's a great piece of music, I need to practice though! Especially the crazy articulation in the 6/8 7/8 bars - the slurred pairs aren't where you'd first expect them to be. And, for that matter, the crazy part in the middle of the piece with the quad-tuplets (???? not sure what they're called - they're 4 notes in the space of 3 beats (ie: half) of a 6/8 bar) - the fingering is very tricky to get fluidly. Also, apparently the test piece for the Band Competition (at easter) is really hard (or so says a guy in QWO...). hmmm.

Also, my other band's rehearsal this evening went well. New music - I'll need to practice a bit. It was my first rehearsal with that band, but the second of the year for the band - last week I was at a friend's production (musical) which was pretty cool. For some reason the trumpets were on the confident side of things... i.e.: loudish. Either that or I've got a slight headache or both. Anyhow.

And finally (most importantly for today), I didn't go to the Zoo tonight. Nothing was on there... Will need to wait another month for it....... It's two months since the last time; the very small chance of correcting my mistake and possibly being a bit happier (in that respect) is fading to zero :[

2 Gears

So earlier this morning, I rode my bike to Mitchy train station to pick up my car. Unfortunately, I haven't riden't my bike in a while, and I had 2 functioning gears. Great. Anyhow. Last night was pretty good, but ended a bit iffy...

Ohhh, in case you're a regular reader of this place, and wondering where this place got to over the past week or so.... I kind of forgot to give my hosting and domain registration company some money.... Or rather, when they sent a reminder email, I forgot that while my credit card number that they had was correct, however, it expired a year ago and I've gotten a new one since.... Ooops.

All back and good now.

I've been baking brownies this evening: for choir tomorrow (because I feel like it) and work on Wednesday (it will be my last day before I move sections). Yum yum yum.

The Median Isn't the Message is an article about medians and cancers. Worth a read.

While I'm at it, I may as well plug the Brain Tumour Australia website.

Ohhh. I have a new category on this website.

Occasionally, I (primarily for Christmas and birthday cards) take flowery photos and stick them on a piece of coloured card. Before this Christmas 2005, I cruised around Roma Street Parklands for an hour or two, snapping away.

This image didn't get to be a card, because of the blotch on the flower, but it's a pretty cool image, I think.

Back In Canberra

So, since the 28th, it's been a matter of waiting and seeing what the surgeon in Sydney would say on Thursday (yesterday). This involved us all (Me, J, S, C) going up to Sydney on Wednesday. Wednesday evening / night I cruised around with J and J. After a yummy dinner we went to one of the peculiarities of Sydney - Max Brennar. For those that don't know, Max Brennar (or maybe Brenner, or something similar) is a chocolate chain in old Sydney towne: hot chocolate, coffees are on the menu; you can buy chocolates if you so desire. Anyhow, getting back to J’s place on Wednesday night I was suitably full and chocolately.

Yesterday, I went to St Leonards to visit B in Royal North Shore. Then to pick up J and C to go to the Prince of Wales. “The” appointment with the surgeon on Thursday was 2 ¼ hrs late, oh well. But the outcome is relatively positive (especially compared to the advice from Canberra Hospital the previous week). There’ll be another operation on Monday morning. We’ll all go back up to Sydney on Sunday " so he can be admitted in the late afternoon.

So now Monday is the next key date…

In other news, earlier in the week it was good to catch up with an old friend - clarinettist from Adelaide. It appears that on a public holiday in Canberra (2nd), there wasn't too much open in the way of restaurants, etc. But an Indian place was found, followed by some yummy tea.

A recent (very - it occured < 5 min ago) conversation with ms x:

no, I don't want too [write anything]. I have a sore toe.
Kevin, as if you're going to post that.
(laughs).
you're a freak.
(more laughter, hillarity ensues)
Kevin, shut up.
I'm going to bed.
