Unlucky Tshirt

So my really awesome tshirt is now officially my unlucky tshirt. Not that it was my lucky tshirt, just a favourite. I'm mister grumpy pants at the moment, although on the upside I just ate a particularly yummy orange.

Arnold Sonatina

Who would have thought - youtube has more uses other than watching old muppets clips... teehee.

Anyhow, this clip is worth listening too - a performance of the Malcolm Arnold Sonatina for clarinet. He plays it a bit differently to how I want to play it (just slightly), but it's good none the less. It pointed out a few of the places where I wasn't playing things entirely accurately...

Random Quotes

I'm cleaning up my tasks in Outlook - I have a whole bunch of quotes that are below that I've come across over the past several years (?) or more or so. Not really sure where some of them are from. Probably from TV shows, songs, and the odd random person. My tasks list is completely inappropriate place to store them, so may as well chuck them on my blog, eh?

* don't get upset at the trivial things
* time spent wishing is time spent wasted
* when there's newbies - it forces you to look at who you were, and who you've become
* have a good life. have a fantastic life [Doctor Who ?]
* you have to cherish every moment of it because you never know when it's going to end.
* find out who you are, before you regret it. because life is so short; there's no time to waste it. [Garbage]
* So, your Holiness, now your priests are dead, and I am left alive. But in truth it is I who am dead, and they who live. For as always, your Holiness, the spirit of the dead will survive in the memory of the living. [The Mission]
* May god stand between you and harm, and all the empty places you must walk

British

So first rehearsal back after the break was tops. This term we're playing all sorts of British music. Although played some of them before (late 90's in Canberra): Crown Imperial, Holst First Suite, Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite, Irish Tune & Shepherds Hey. It's great!

Tomorrow is my last day for the week - my sister is coming to town. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off, to show her the sights of Brissy.

Interesting Economist article about American military power.

Lost Cable

| Permalink | Comments (1) | Life | ( 07/07/2007 - 10:19 PM )

Annoyingly, I've lost a cable: 3.5mm plug to 2.5mm plug. I only use it a few times a year - but can not find it now... :(

Where where where?

Stuff

Below is some random stuff, enjoy!

Earlier this afternoon I went for my first jog in ages. I mean ages: it was summer last time I went for a jog. Consequently my 2.7 km run around the nearby oval (twice) took a bit of effort. Could have done more (but not that much more), but didn’t want to push myself (was sick week before last, and getting rid of the cold this past week). My earlier idea of doing the bridge to Brisbane is off the agenda – not enough time to get vaguely ready for it. Next year - if I get my bum into gear early enough.

After a hot shower that was probably more than the 4 minutes recommended by the water saving people, I got out a winter (ie: thick) jumper – maroon, mum made. It’s great – warm: pitty it doesn’t get cold enough in Brisbane to wear it. She was up in town weekend before last to catch our concert (which went well). Afterwards I had coffee with friends, and picked an ad for Volunteering Queensland. I may help out somewhere. But probably not until next year. How I currently volunteer is stressing me out a bit (for two reasons: the time needed, and the way things have been asked of me to get things done). Which is a bit annoying.

Anyhow.

My toe is on the weird side of things. After my long (8 hour) walk a bit over a month ago, it was swollen (obviously bigger than my left big toe). Anyhow, it has been discoloured underneath since, and recently the nail has been a bit funny coloured in parts. Moral of the story – don’t do stupidly long walks.

Wednesday night sees my younger sister coming to town for a few days – taking Thursday and Friday off work so we can ‘hang’ and do stuff.

Last Saturday one of my rogaining team mates mentioned Geocaching – where people hide a small box of things, and then publish the coordinates of it on the web. Other people then try and find it using a hand held GPS receiver. It sounds like kind of fun – a treasure hunt – which is sort of like rogaining? – but not GPS receiver for me, so no fun.

I tried out Internet on my phone – it’s small, slow. Pointless when you have 500kbyte/s download at your house. Trying to think whether there’s anything on the internet that can’t wait at most half a day or so before you get back to your house? Maybe weather conditions?

Well, I should do some work on my assignment – need to work on a the layout (third question) part of the assignment. And plan two meals – one for Thursday (family friends plus sister), and a no yeast meal for a week or so after that. And clean out my inbox…

Station Stampede

| Permalink | Comments (0) | Life | ( 04/07/2007 - 9:30 PM )

The rogaine on Saturday was tops. I really enjoyed myself. It was out near Mt Byron / Somerset Dam area. Was fairly hilly. I got caught out a bit in the planning of the route though... In some parts of the map, only index contour lines were shown - not contour lines. Ie: contours were 10 metres, indexed every 50 metres. The idea being the country in parts was so steep that showing all contours would be impossible hard to read (they'd be too close together) - so just index contours were shown. Crazy steep.

Anyhow, it was really nice, scenic country side around there - especially the views from the top of the hills.

If you've got Google Earth installed, you can download the maps, and the teams routes. Go to: QLD Rogaine website --> Results --> Station Stampede results are at the top of the list - pdf results and Google Earth info (map and routes).

On the plus side, there's a 3hr event coming up - end of July. Yay!

The house that I was interested in a couple of weekends back got taken before I could put an offer in... just after a couple of days. Not too disappointed though - when mum had a look over it, she pointed out several things that were negative for me that I hadn't picked up on.... Will look again this weekend.

Nokia 6288

| Permalink | Comments (0) | Life | ( 04/07/2007 - 9:07 PM )

As of yesterday, I have a new phone - a Nokia 6288. A black slidy phone. I like the minimal stuff on the front - screen and a few control buttons. The synchronisation is great - but I'm still in the process of cleaning up all my contacts. Need to figure out why my phone number doesn't appear on other people's phones.

I may at some point get a Bluetooth adaptor for my computer (which is very old - a decade or so!), to save plugging the USB cable in and out all the time. But probably only if/when the cable dies.

Good so far.

I need to find some sort of protective case. I've seen one phone similar to this that was stored in a small cloth bag.... hmmm....

Radio Is Silly

| Permalink | Comments (0) | Life | ( 04/07/2007 - 8:59 PM )

The other day, I realised that radio is generally silly and a waste of time. I used to spend my entire commute (all 3 minutes of it) flicking through stations to find something good. A week of this went by - and so I've decided - radio in the car is for background music only, no something to listen to. (Because there's nothing particularly good). So, four of my five presets are now jjj, the other a local classical music station. Background music. No junk.
